Standard Ladle Designs

Transfer, casting and treatment ladles can be supplied based on the following standard designs:

  • Workhorse heavy-duty geared crane ladle: For capacities up to 40,000Kg (88,000lb). Based on over 25 years of experience and designed to be compatible with modern refractory practices. Fitted with bolt on trunnions and an Air vented Centre band as standard.
  • Essex  heavy-duty geared crane ladle: for capacities up to 40,000Kg (88,000lb). The standard heavy-duty ladle, in use in foundries around the world.
  • Cardiff heavy-duty geared drum ladle: For capacities up to 5000Kg (11,000lb).
  • Westminster medium duty geared crane ladle: For capacities up to 4000Kg (8800lb). Ideal for Aluminium foundries.
  • Cornwall medium duty geared ladle, for capacities up to 750Kg (1650lb) and for use with a geared racking hoist.
  • Somerset medium duty Vee bail geared ladle, for capacities up to 1250Kg (2750lb).
  • Lincoln Ungeared ladle, for capacities up to 1250Kg (2750lb).
  • Windsor Ungeared ladle for capacities up to 750Kg and for use with a geared racking hoist.

Ladle designs can incorporate features such as:

Detachable base sections and split shells to assist with the re-lining operation.

Splash Guards and Heat deflectors.

Covers for heat retention and operator’s protection.

Fork pockets and attachments for transportation via a forklift truck.

Ductile Iron (SG) Treatment Ladles

Ductile iron can be most efficiently produced by using specially designed equipment. Acetarc design and manufacture ductile iron treatment ladles and systems for most processes including:

Deep treatment (Sandwich process) ladle.

Although this is the simplest process, a correctly designed ladle can still offer better performance and cost savings over using an oversize standard ladle.  The deep treatment ladle shell is usually designed to have a ratio of 2:1 for the height to diameter. The ladle also incorporates an extended freeboard to contain the reaction.

Tundish Cover Treatment Ladle

An improvement on the sandwich method, the tundish greatly reduces the fume, increases the Mg yield and reduces both the slag formation and the temperature loss. Probably the most cost effective ductile iron process for most foundries. The savings due to reduced amount of additives necessary and the energy savings possible lead to a short payback period.

The tundish ladle is available in a number of standard designs:

Loose tundish Ladle

The tundish is removed after each treatment and before the ladle is rotated.

Fixed tundish Ladle

The tundish is fixed to the top of the ladle, either by bolts or clamps, for the duration of the operating shift and offers improved performance over the loose tundish ladle.

Sliding tundish

This is a variation on the loose tundish ladle and is designed to eliminate the handling problems associated with the loose tundish between treatment cycles.

Teapot spout treatment ladle

This is a similar process to the tundish method with a covered ladle fitted with a specially design teapot spout. The ladle is both filled and emptied via the teapot spout, giving the performance of a fixed tundish ladle but with a more compact size.

Other treatment ladles for wire feed and plunging bell processes are also available.

The Acetarc Oilbath Gearbox

All Acetarc geared ladles use worm and wheel gear units, available in a range of sizes, for the rotation of the ladle. This is range of proven designs that utilises roller and ball bearings throughout to ensure that the gearbox gives perfect control at all times.

Motorised Gearbox Option

Most Acetarc ladles can be fitted with a motorised gearbox for powered rotation. The motor can be either electric or pneumatic depending on the customer’s requirements.

All Acetarc Motorised ladles are fitted with a clutch release assembly that allows the ladle to be manually operated in the event of a power failure.

Spares

Whilst Acetarc ladles are designed to give long and trouble free service, if spares are required then these are usually held ex-stock and can invariably be dispatched immediately.
